Community and Service Projects

One of the stated goals of SKD is to "Provide, through its local chapters, cultural stimulation on college campuses and promote interest in literature and the English language in surrounding communities." We make this goal a reality through our dedication to the surrounding communities. Some of the things we are involved in include: hosting various drives, such as a book drive; tutoring; helping kids in need through committing time at community centers; and more.

Alabama Prison Arts and Education Service Project
Spring 2017
Driving to Auburn to Drop Off the Donations

Our chapter of Sigma Kappa Delta is held a book donation drive for the Alabama Prison Arts + Education Project (APAEP) Spring 2017. Housed through Auburn University, the project began in 2002 and seeks to help prisoners receive an education and to sustain an interest in lifelong learning. We felt that these values also corresponded with our own values as SKD members. We also seek to promote the interest in education throughout our communities.  Our donations helped to supply the Draper Correctional Facility for the IDSC Degree Program.  Donations were collected from Monday, March 20th until Friday, April 21st. We appreciate all of your help and donations!

Past Readings

For the 2016 summer semester, we visited the Pelham Public Library for a reading of Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak. After reading the book, we transformed the children into "wild things" and acted out the book, ending with a "wild rumpus." The summer service project was a huge success. Thanks to all who volunteered.
